From 1 May 2025 , new regulations for passport photos will come into force in Germany . Anyone wishing to apply for a passport or ID card in future should be sure to find out about the changes.

The German government is introducing a new, secure procedure for transmitting passport photos. The aim is to increase protection against forgery and strengthen digital administration.
❌ What is no longer permitted?
- Self-made passport photos (e.g. taken with a mobile phone)
- Printed photos from home
- Photos from websites or photo booths
✅ What is now mandatory?
- Passport photos must be taken on site in a certified machine or by a state-recognised photographer.
- After the appointment, you will receive a QR code, , which will be submitted with the application documents.
- A list of certified providers is publicly available. Prices vary depending on the provider.
